Biblical organization of the church is an essential aspect of being true to the divine pattern. Elders, deacons, ministers, and all other members need to know their respective qualifications and responsibilities. Each local congregation of the church is to be led by a plurality of
elders (
Acts 14:23, 20:17; Titus 1:5). Elders are also known by the terms
shepherds and
overseers (
1 Peter 5:1-2). These men are to meet the leadership qualifications found in
1 Tim. 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. Having been duly selected and appointed, they are to accept the responsibilities assigned by the Spirit of God (
Acts 20:28).
Elders provide leadership through example, teaching and counsel. While all doctrine has already been given in Scripture, it is the responsibility of the elders to see that the church follows this divine instruction. Their guidance helps insure the spiritual and organic growth of the church (Eph. 4:11-13). They seek to lead the entire church and individual members in finding our talents and using them in the Lord’s service. Church members are to have due regard for elders, and to obey those who lead (1 Thess. 5:12-13; Heb. 13:17).
