Deacons must meet qualifications of character, experience and ability, similar to those for elders (1 Tim. 3:8-13). It is important to note that godly spouses have much to do with one’s ability to serve. Elders are in charge of the Lord’s work in a given church (Acts 20:28). To expedite the local work, elders often charge deacons with responsibility for specific areas of work to which they are suited. Deacons in turn often enlist the aid of other members to carry out their responsibilities. While all members are servants, it is important to have faithful deacons ready to carry out key tasks.
