The Denton congregation was established in 1941 with some fifty members. This congregation first met in a renovated house on Welch Street, near the North Texas State College campus (now UNT). Outreach to college students was a high priority. The congregation grew rapidly and a building with a seating capacity of 325 was constructed in 1947. Steady growth continued through the 1950’s and a new auditorium was completed in 1957, to accommodate 500. In 1964 a Bible Chair addition was made to the building. Hundreds of college students were taking Bible classes for credit at that time.
The 1970’s and 1980’s were challenging times for churches of Christ across the land. While many began to make doctrinal changes, the Denton elders determined to remain Biblically conservative. The 1980’s brought the end of the Bible Chair program after a state ruling disallowed credit for religious courses taught off campus. The congregation saw a decline in numbers during this time. The 1990’s were a time of rebuilding and growth for the congregation. Through a loving appeal to all ages and cultures, the Lord blessed us with many new families. Iglesia de Cristo, our Spanish speaking assembly, meets in the same building as the English-speaking church. Our outreach to the university campuses has been renewed and numerous college students make us their church home away from home. An average of 120 souls worship together here each Sunday. With seasoned leadership, capable servants, dedicated teachers, and a membership united by love for God and one another, we believe the future to be bright. |
